Baltimore, Co. Cork

Recently I was lucky enough to escape down to Balimore, Co Cork for a couple of days R&R. Needless to say, the camera came along with me! Situated along the Wild Atlantic Way, a few miles from Skibbereen, Baltimore is small fishing village full of both charm and stunning scenery.

Taking a ferry from Baltimore Harbour, one has the opportunity to explore the islands off the coast, namely Sherkin Island and Cape Clear. Sherkin Island is an incredibly beautiful place for a hike, some photographs and possibly a pint (although not a Monday in early April as I found out!) Out on the far side for the island there are spectacular views of the Atlantic and neighbouring Cape Clear. It is also possible to see whales and dolphins off the coast in part of the world, but unfortunately I didn't get to spot any this time.

One of my favourite spots around the area had to be the Beacon. Standing proudly atop the headland at the mouth of Baltimore harbour, the massive white beacon acts as marker for fishing vessels approaching the narrow harbour. The views from here were simple breath-taking, especially at sunset as seen below.
